More dyeing tidbits…

This weekend, on my way back from Chicago, I stopped at Wooly Knob Fiber Mill to pick up some fleeces I’d sent in for processing. I ended up talking with co-owner Matt for about an hour and gathered some very, very interesting ideas.

The one which completely floored me, and which I cannot wait to try out, is to take a center-pull ball of yarn and dip only one half of it in dye. The way it’s wound influences where the dye hits along the strand. Apparently, when knitted up, it’ll create its own pattern. I might try it on a hand-wound ball, too — I suspect the pattern would be much more random. Oh, and what if you dip-dyed top and bottom two different colors, then did one side in a third color? Say, yellow on top and blue on the bottom. Dip the side in red and get a “quarter ball” each of orange and purple. Those colors would probably be obnoxious, but you see what I’m saying. This is one instance where a color mixing wheel would really come in handy! (Check art stores – here’s one that might work nicely).

I’m going to have to try this trick. I wondered if you could do the same thing with roving (though it might be a bit difficult to flip it.) My brain is swimming with all of the possibilities…
