Article Pract

Before the news, a brief preface to the story. I don’t like talking on the phone very much. If I know know you, sure. But due to pre-Knitgrrl-era jobs as a computer support person and a “you have to cold call!” stockbroker (yes, really), I’ve got an illogical semi-fear of the phone. Imagine this… I was supporting the computers used in those mall kiosks and other retail shops. The kind of calls I had to deal with:

Ring ring
Them: I think I need a new keyboard.
Me: (grumbling silently — of course you think you need a new [insert part here], you all do) Really? Why is that?
Them: I kind of threw up on it.
Me: (how do you “kind of” throw up on something? Either you did or you didn’t!)

The call just got worse from there. And we won’t even go into the weeks of stockbroker training where my (99.9% male) co-workers insisted on watching Boiler Room first to get psyched up. Oh yes. It really was like that.

So — I’m going to be in San Francisco for Maker Faire next month and I’d asked for Bay Area shop suggestions from my publicist. Of the ones she recommended, I liked the look of Article Pract the best. Checked the site… no email. Oh darn. I resigned myself to dialing the phone. The person who answered asked who was calling and I explained who I was, that I was coming to San Francisco next month and wanted to know if they’d like to do a signing or workshops. She immediately put me on with owner Christina Stork, who is just about the most adorable human ever. The gist of our call, at the beginning: they ordered a bunch of my books the day before, she was just thinking about me and pow! here I am on the phone calling her. Needless to say, not the kind of call you should dread making. I’m really looking forward to going there!

She’s making class selections now — if there’s anything of mine you’d like to see in particular (see the events page for a partial list), let me know and I’ll pass it along. Otherwise I’ll post the details when they’re available. Hurray!

That is the new shop, I think. I know it wasn’t there when I was in SF last fall! Also worth a visit: Imagiknit!
The owner there is *super* 🙂

    Lucky you! SF is fun!

I love Article Pract! I went there a couple times when I would go visit one of my girlfriends who lives in Oakland. It is such a great cute store. Definitely an east bay favorite! 🙂

the staff has a bit of a snobby attitude, in my experience….i dread going in there now, but they are just around the corner from my house, and since i am a yarn junkie, so i end up in there more than i’d like. however, i never feel the love.

Cool! You are in my neck of the woods. Can I buy you coffee while you are here?
