Second Annual NaKniSweMo!

by Shannon on September 13, 2007

This year, we’re going to knit along with our writing pals over at NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) again. Last year’s post about it is here. Note that we changed the name after realizing NaNoSweMo made no sense!

How it works with NaNoWriMo: write a 50,000-word novel in a month. As they say on that page: “This is not as scary as it sounds.”

How it works with NaKniSweMo: knit a 50,000-stitch sweater in a month. If you divide your chosen sweater pattern’s rows or rounds by 30, you’ll have an idea of how many rows you need to knit each day to make it. Yes, the stitch count thing is crazy, but I think I can say with confidence that most sweaters out there are at least that, or more.

New this year: a NaKniSweMo Ravelry group! But no worries if you’re still on the waitlist — post a comment here and say you’re taking part. If you’re super-proud of your FO, send me a photo and I’ll post it in December!

Suggested sweaters, if you’re stuck: why not try the Faux Fair Isle from Spin to Knit? It’s excellent for stashbusting, too. In fact, since I’m all about the destashing, I will award a prize to the most creative destash-tastic Faux Fair Isle sweater. You really can throw just about any yarn at that pattern, handspun or no, and it’ll work.

[shaky voice] …ahhh….ok….I *think* I’ll try….

But [firming up now] what if my handspun is all slightly different gauge?? I mean, stash is stash, yes. But my main color may be different from the skeins of oddities here and there. Double up to meet gauge? Man. I’m gonna hit your book again tonight.

My husband does Nanowrimo every year. I’ve done NaNoBloMo (blog once a day every day in November) before, but this sounds like a blast – kind of like an elongated version of the Knitting Olympics!

Now I just have to go pick a sweater pattern to knit, and figure out what yarn in my stash to use….

Jenn September 21, 2007 at 8:06 am

Count me in – I just ordered some HPY so I can make the Tilted Duster on the cover of the fall Interweave Knits. I’m still on the wait-list over at Ravelry.

Kate Smith September 21, 2007 at 2:21 pm

I’m on the waitlist at Ravelry (only 10,480 ahead of me!), so I’m chiming in to say, “me too!” I have some yummy tomato red wool, the new Mr Greenjeans pattern from Knitty, and I’m as ready as I’ll ever be.

I think this is wonderfully clever, and I am totally in! I have a ridiculous queue of sweaters I’m anxious to knit, so I hope this will be good practice at being disciplined and faithful to one sweater. I’m also very much looking forward to seeing everyone else’s, ten years from now when I finally get into Ravelry, hehe.

Karla September 23, 2007 at 5:12 pm

ooh, i hope i get on ravelry within the next month!! either way. . I’m in! sounds like a good excuse for some valuable xmas knitting. . .

Shannon September 23, 2007 at 5:24 pm

Hey, you don’t HAVE to be on Ravelry to play along! It’s just a bonus. Supercool to see so many new people participating this year!

Jodi September 26, 2007 at 1:54 am

Ooh! Very Cool! I’m in! Just have to find a sweater pattern and some yarn.

Tina October 6, 2007 at 3:44 pm

I think I would like to participate? This is the first I’ve heard of such a thing and I’m not sure if or what the requirements are. Can someone please let me know how do this?
Thanks

Shannon October 6, 2007 at 3:46 pm

Knit an entire 50,000-stitch sweater during the month of November, Tina — that’s all!

(Pretty much every sweater imaginable will fill this requirement)

Atara October 7, 2007 at 10:59 am

I’m in! I’m still on the waitlist for Ravelry, but I’m hoping to be in by US Thanksgiving. -.- I’ve had the yarn for Knitty’s Top Secret for ages and ages, and this will give me an excuse to finally make it.

Maeg October 12, 2007 at 4:08 pm

I’m in. This will be my first sweater, and I’m hoping this KAL will give me the motivation to finish it. I decided that if I’m going to do it, then I need to finish at least one Christmas gift in October. So far, I’m on course.

I’ll be knitting the Sandy Cardigan from Big Girl Knits — all garter stitch, all the time. What can I say? Ever since I saw brooklyntweed’s Adult Tomten Jacket, I wanted one even though it would not flatter me. I’m hoping that the custom fitting of this pattern will make it work for me.

It’s definitely a non-standard way to assemble a sweater, so I hope it goes OK. I’m still relatively new to knitting, so I’m hoping my Ravelry invite comes through before I get too deep into it.

I have added a competition with prizes and everything onto my business blog. As I have knitted goodies on offer from my website, I thought getting people involved in the Knit a Sweater in a Month campaign would be really fun. The soggy wet winter is settling in here in England, so I think we could all benefit from something cozy and warm to snuggle into.

Yarnthulhu October 18, 2007 at 1:55 pm

I’m in! This will definitely motivate me to start (and finish) my next sweater project, Snow White. Great idea!

Jessica!! October 23, 2007 at 7:39 pm

hmmm…I wanna play…but…

What’s an example of a less than 50,000 stitch sweater?? My luck would be that I choose a sweater I really want to knit only to find it is much less than 50,000. :)

Kat October 24, 2007 at 9:04 pm

I’m in, and I’m knitting my first sweater. So exciting – I’ve used Socktoberfest for my first socks, and now NaKniSweMo for my first sweater. What’s next, I wonder?

Mary October 25, 2007 at 7:42 am

I’m in, but I’m crocheting a sweater next month rather than knitting one. I’m trying to work out the gauge issues this week. The pattern is the Sera Lace Top from the Fall Interweave Crochet. I hope to wear it to my dh’s company formal at the end of November.

Rebecca in CO October 25, 2007 at 8:18 am

I think I’m going to give this a try! Count me in!

AJ October 25, 2007 at 9:57 am

*sheepishly* I’m in. I think. No, I’m in. Really.

This is just the kick in the toosh I needed to finally get the requisite sweater on my needles.

Krissy October 25, 2007 at 1:03 pm

I am so joining the NaKniSweMo for this year. Hopefully I’ll be on Raverly in time to post my own pics of the FO. I’ll be making the Caftan Pullover from the IK Fall 2006.

I can hardly hold onto my panties.

Carole October 26, 2007 at 8:13 am

Sounds like a challenge but I’m going to try. I’ll see you all over at Ravelry.

Ina October 26, 2007 at 8:18 am

Woot! Thanks for doing this again – I’m in!

artmomma October 26, 2007 at 10:13 am

I’m in! I already have a pattern picked out. Now for yarn!

Wanda October 26, 2007 at 12:44 pm

I’m in for it again this year! Woo-hoo!

northern knitter October 26, 2007 at 8:21 pm

New to cyber knitting – have no clue what Ravelry is – but love the idea of a challenge – so I’m in – it’s a challenge for me to take on such a large project and finish in a month – yikes!

Susan October 27, 2007 at 12:00 pm

This sounds great. And I have just the pattern and the yarn.
Now I have a real push for getting a start.
Knitgrrl you are brillant!

Karen October 27, 2007 at 2:59 pm

Im In havent decided what to knit though

Miss Scarlett October 28, 2007 at 5:27 pm

Well I desperately need some sweaters – I am freezing these days! And I do have some stash piling up…
Ok.
I’m in.
Now if I manage to finish a sweater in a month – well – it will be miraculous because I don’t finish socks in a month! :-)

Jasmine October 30, 2007 at 10:47 am

Well, I don’t have a sweater picked out and I am currently in the middle of another sweater but why not — I think I have a sweater kit or two that I could tackle (but maybe one of the simpler ones?)

Hillary October 31, 2007 at 11:31 am

What’s life without a challenge? Right? Ok, I’m in. I have 2 sweaters for me in the queue and I’ll cast on for one of them tomorrow. No illusions that I’ll finish on time but stranger things have happened.

Katrina October 31, 2007 at 3:09 pm

I was just pondering today to make Cobblestone by brooklyntweed for my husband for Christmas. Just the push I needed. Thanks

Rebecca November 1, 2007 at 7:02 am

I’m in. don’t know if the sweater I’m knitting has 50,000 stitches or not but just having a completed project in one month is enough for me!

Bethe November 1, 2007 at 7:42 am

I’m late to the party, but I’d love to join, too! See you all in Ravelry.

Rosie November 1, 2007 at 7:57 am

I have been looking forward to this! It totally crept up on me that it started today though! I have my yarn and pattern. I just need to get cracking on it tonight!

Teresa C November 1, 2007 at 8:27 am

I’m in, but I won’t be starting a new sweater until next week! EEEK! Hope I make it.

artmomma November 1, 2007 at 9:17 am

I’m in! I have yarn and everything!

The Chick With Stix November 1, 2007 at 10:05 pm

I’m participating! I started my sweater today and I’m making the Alexandra Ballerina Sweater from Fitted Knits to go along with the Fitted Knits Along.

Helen November 2, 2007 at 7:34 am

I have no business joining up…
I have this shawl that’s consuming me…
but … I LOVE this idea. So, despite the shawl, and despite the ungodly number of mittens I seem to have committed to knitting by Solstice…. I’m going to join up!
now…. to assign Mermaid for it? or to go for something more… relaxed?

Deborah November 2, 2007 at 12:18 pm

hey I’ll join, it will be my first time.

del November 3, 2007 at 4:39 pm

Is it too late? I had no idea I’d be starting a sweater this month but my Interweave Knits winter issue came today & lo & behold, I just had to cast on!

Katie November 3, 2007 at 7:21 pm

I’m in! I just got yarn for a new sweater!

Opal November 4, 2007 at 12:00 am

I’m in! Head first! I hope I don’t get a concussion. :)

theLady November 6, 2007 at 7:22 pm

I think I’ll be trying the Rowena cardigan from Knit 2 Together. My first sweater ever, here goes…

Fleecy November 6, 2007 at 11:00 pm

Drats, I forgot to comment here..I started on the 1st! Thank you so much for this, it’s the only way I’ll ever get a whole sweater finished! I’m doing a top down raglan cardi (my first cardi) and it’s going along quite well.

Rachel November 18, 2007 at 10:05 am

I didn’t realize that you had to officially sign up to be part. So please sign me up – I’ve been knitting like crazy and plan to beat the deadline

Becky November 3, 2008 at 6:20 am

I’m in! February Lady Sweater…swatched and cast on on the 1st!
