Sheepless in Seattle

(Sorry, Amy. I couldn’t help the joke when I read about this swap, it’s the first thing that came to mind!)

Announcing the First Sheepless Yarn Swap from Interweave Press

Just in time for summer knitting, Interweave Press is celebrating the launch of Amy R. Singer’s No Sheep for You: Knit Happy with Cotton, Silk, Linen, Hemp, Bamboo & Other Delights by organizing the first Sheepless Yarn Swap.

Registration is open until May 1.

Perhaps you are allergic to wool, don’t like how it feels against your skin, or just don’t wish to use anything that came from an animal? Or maybe you prefer knitting with cooler plant-fiber yarns for hotter weather? Do you want to meet other fiber fans who feel the same way?

Participants in the No Sheep for You Secret Pals Skein Swap will receive two skeins of nonwool yarn—one in June and one in July 2007—from their anonymous secret pal; they also mail two nonwool skeins in two months to their assigned pal.

You can listen to an interview with Amy here. When I get a second, I have to do a full-on review of this book for the site, but the short version is: it is absolutely brilliant, whether you have allergies like Amy or just like to take on new fiber challenges.

I don’t think I need to tell any of you how much I like these fibers — my alt-fibers class and upcoming book (which has been in the works for many, many moons now) are so fun to teach and design for, and now that many more companies are incorporating soy, bamboo, etc into their products, there is such a wide range of yarns to choose from. When I first started getting into soy yarns — spinning and knitting a hat for a vegan friend of mine — I had no idea how popular they’d become! Lucky us.

There’s also a No Sheep knit-along, if you’re interested.
