Recycled fiber fun

I was so pleased when I picked up the latest issue of Interweave Knits and found an article on recycled yarn featuring a pattern by Ashley Martineau. She’s one of my yarn-recyclin’ heroines.

No doubt you’ve read her online tutorial on ripping apart thrift store sweaters for yarn. If you haven’t, you should! (Especially the FAQ, featuring an adorable photo of Ashley wearing a yarn “wig”!) It’s one of the best ways to get quality yarn for cheap, not to mention it’s eco-friendly.

This all ties into another book I have in the works, too. (Not the plant fiber one — I usually have several simmering on my mental back burner at any given time!) Rumor has it there are several similar books being published this year and next. One that’s been made public is AlterKnits by Interweave’s art director Leigh Radford. Is it October yet?! I can’t wait to see the projects. They showed her knitted screen door made from nylon thread in the magazine. How cool! How crafty! How…well, let’s just say we’re going to need a new screen, too, if our kitten keeps climbing up the side door!

The photo above is a sneak preview of something I’ve been working on for my recycle-y book. It’s a jacket inspired by Sally from the Tim Burton film The Nightmare Before Christmas. My boyfriend watches it every Halloween…and every Christmas. (I even made him a Jack Skellington stocking in 2003!)
